Players
Do not fear failure. If you are constantly worried about messing up you will always grip your stick too tight and never be able to play to your potential. And with that, Give 100%, 100% of the time. If you are going hard and you are passionate about what you are doing, it doesn’t matter if you make a mistake, you just learn from it. Everyone makes mistakes, it’s about having a short memory, becoming better from the mistake, and worrying about executing the next play.
Checking
Posted in Fundamental Skills.
The lacrosse check is an essential element of the game. The game is very physical and contact is a big part of it. Being aggressive and physical is a very good quality to have for a lacrosse player, especially for defensive and midfield players, but even attackers can benefit from a good checking technique, especially […]
Cradling Drills
Posted in Fundamental Skills, How to Play Lacrosse.
Since stick skills are the most important thing for beginners to learn, most of the drills and games that follow focus on stick work. Another important aspect of teaching young players is allowing them to have fun. So, coaches have to find a balance between working on their players’ stick skills, letting them play lacrosse, […]
Scooping
Posted in Fundamental Skills, How to Play Lacrosse.
Scooping a ground ball in lacrosse is one of the most important skills in this sport. There are numerous opportunities in a lacrosse game that require a player to scoop a ground ball. The lacrosse scoop is a technique used to gain possession of the ball when it is on the ground.
Shooting
Posted in Fundamental Skills.
If you want to shoot hard, you should grab a bag of balls and shoot until your arms fall off. While the mechanics of shooting are technical, I have simplified them into six major points. Shooting a lacrosse ball has elements of a batter’s swing, a golfer’s drive, and a pitcher’s throwing motion. I hope […]
Drills & Games

The goals of a program for beginners are simple. All of the drills and games are meant to keep things flowing in practice and to ensure that the kids are having fun while learning to play. Also, there is a tremendous amount of stick work with an emphasis on multiple repetitions in all the practices.
Position Specific Concepts
Posted in Fundamental Skills, How to Play Lacrosse.
In lacrosse, there are four different positions: attack, midfield, defense, and goalie. In a game, there are three attackmen, three midfielders, three defensemen, and one goalie on the field for each team. It is important for beginners to try out all positions to see which one they like the best. This will also give them […]
Beginner Stick Work
Posted in Fundamental Skills.
Having good stick work in lacrosse or “having a good stick” is the single most important skill with which to measure a beginner’s progress. Lacrosse is a skill and finesse game. It is a game that gets more fun as one’s stick skills improve. We believe that when teaching beginners, coaches should find creative ways […]
Goalie Saves
The most important job for the goalie is to save the ball. The first thing that a coach has to do is get his goalie to see the ball. Many young goalies move too soon. As a coach, you can distinguish many of your goalies’ bad habits by faking shots at them during warm-ups.
Attack – Two Man Games
Posted in Advanced Skills.
Another position-specific concept for attackmen at the intermediate level is two-man games. Two-man games are moves that two attackmen can use to beat two defensemen.
Position-Specific Drills

Just as with any other sport or skill, in lacrosse, you can always work hard and keep getting better. The lacrosse tips and drills in this section are for players looking to take their game to the next level.
Goalie Stance
Goalie is the one position that coaches struggle to teach because they have never played before. Some coaches try to make the goalie position more complicated than it really is. They turn it into a complex set of rules, like a golf pro teaching the perfect swing. The bottom line for goalies at any level […]
Goalie Positioning
There are many conflicting theories on where a goalie should stand in the goal to be most effective. It is our position that goalies should play an extremely shallow arc or very close to the goal line. The lacrosse goal is six feet by six feet and lacrosse goalies do not wear many pads. Therefore, […]
