Sam Jones

Sam Jones is entering his second season as head coach of the Virginia Wesleyan University men’s lacrosse program in May 2024. His journey to the sidelines in Virginia Beach is unlike most in college athletics, marked by both military service and lacrosse excellence. After serving ten years as a SEAL Officer in the United States Navy, Jones joined Virginia Wesleyan full-time in 2024 through the SOCOM Warrior Care Fellowship Program.

Under his leadership, the men’s lacrosse program has begun to turn a corner, achieving its most successful season in recent years and setting the stage for a promising future.

Building Momentum in Year One

In his first season at the helm, Jones guided Virginia Wesleyan men’s lacrosse to a 7-11 overall record, with a 4-6 mark in conference play. These results secured the team a spot in the ODAC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2016, a milestone that energized both the program and the campus community.

Players and fans alike saw the difference in the team’s competitiveness and resilience. With Jones’ emphasis on discipline, teamwork, and preparation, the Marlins showed a level of consistency and fight that had been missing in recent seasons. His first year laid a strong foundation, and expectations for his second season are even higher.

A Standout Playing Career at Navy

Before embarking on his military career, Jones was a standout lacrosse player at the United States Naval Academy. A native of Annapolis, Maryland, and a product of Severna Park High School, he left a lasting mark on Navy’s lacrosse program.

Jones ranks in the top ten in program history in both points scored (142) and caused turnovers (34). He became the 31st player in Navy history to surpass 100 career points, a testament to his consistency and offensive talent. His efforts earned him the William H. “Dinty” Moore Award three times, presented annually to Navy’s Outstanding Offensive Player.

Recognition for his play extended beyond Annapolis. He received all-conference honors during his career, and as a freshman, was named to the Inside Lacrosse All-Freshmen Team. Jones’ ability to contribute on both ends of the field made him one of the most well-rounded players of his era.

Leadership Beyond the Field

What truly sets Jones apart is his leadership. At the Naval Academy Prep School, he received the inaugural 2nd Lt. “Bull” Barrett Award, recognizing not just athletic performance but also character, dedication, and the ability to inspire others. These qualities carried over into his service as a Navy SEAL Officer, where discipline, resilience, and teamwork were essential.

Jones’ transition from military service to coaching reflects his lifelong commitment to leading by example. His players benefit not only from his lacrosse knowledge but also from the values of accountability, perseverance, and selflessness that he embodies.

Academic and Professional Growth

Jones graduated from the Naval Academy with a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Affairs, adding an academic foundation to his leadership skill set. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Executive Leadership, further preparing him to guide young athletes both on and off the field.

This pursuit underscores his belief in continuous growth and the importance of education — values he passes along to his players as they balance academics and athletics at Virginia Wesleyan.

Looking Ahead

As Sam Jones embarks on his second season leading Virginia Wesleyan men’s lacrosse, optimism surrounds the program. His unique blend of lacrosse excellence, military discipline, and proven leadership has already sparked progress. With the momentum of a playoff berth and a roster eager to build on that success, the Marlins are well-positioned for continued growth.

For Jones, coaching is more than winning games. It is about shaping men of character, fostering resilience, and instilling a commitment to excellence. Virginia Wesleyan men’s lacrosse is entering a new era — and Sam Jones is at the heart of it.
